Dear Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Senate Republican Leader McConnell,
We, the undersigned Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, and activists, express our support for Deputy Labor Secretary Julie Su’s confirmation as Secretary of Labor of the United States. When confirmed, she would bring critical qualifications and experience to the role and would be one of the highest ranking AAPI leaders, serving in the President’s Cabinet alongside U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai.
Julie Su is a trailblazer whose track record speaks for itself. She served as Labor Secretary for the State of California, one of the world’s largest and most complex economies. She led efforts to combat wage theft, expand access to health care and paid family leave, and provide legal services for workers facing exploitation. Additionally, her experience as U.S. Deputy Labor Secretary has given her a thorough understanding of the Labor Department and the current issues facing the economy, businesses, and workers. As business leaders, we recognize the value of this experience and believe it uniquely positions Julie Su to successfully lead the U.S. Department of Labor.
Julie Su’s story and life experiences make her a strong candidate for the role. She brings a unique perspective that is directly linked to many Americans’ experiences. She grew up in a hard-working immigrant household, has worked with many diverse communities, and served as a civil rights attorney fighting for people’s rights.
Furthermore, Julie’s confirmation helps mitigate the current lack of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) representation in government, which is deeply concerning. A report from the Reflective Democracy Campaign revealed that AAPI members make up just 0.9% of elected leaders across all levels of government, despite representing 6.1% of the population. Additionally, AAPIs own over 2.5 million small businesses and create over 5 million jobs. Their impact on the economy is significant and it is crucial that they are strongly represented at the highest level of government.
We urge the Senate to immediately confirm Julie Su as the next U.S. Secretary of Labor. Her confirmation supports our nation’s ability to build a more inclusive economy and government that better represents its constituents.
